Injury patterns are often unique to the communities where they occur. Moreover, injury prevention efforts need to not only address the unique injury patterns in a community but the cultural, behavioral, and economical barriers that may exist. This session will present information on surveillance systems and injury prevention programs in various communities, including rural communities, Hispanic and American Indian populations, and U.S. Army soldiers.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session the participants should be able to 1. describe the pattern of injury morbidity and mortality in diverse communities; 2. identify barriers to the consistent use of injury prevention strategies in diverse communities; and 3. assess attitudes and cultural barriers specific to several diverse communities and describe how these may affect injury prevention efforts in these communities.
