Many injury and violence prevention programs have made great strides in reducing the burden of injury. This poster session will highlight some of the noteworthy prevention programs. In particular it will spotlight the CeaseFire violence prevention program which started in Chicago. This program has demonstrated great results in reducing violence. In fact, there has been a 25% decrease in homicides in Chicago last year due in part to their program. Other injury prevention programs that will be highlighted include prevention programs for suicide, falls in the elderly, and childhood and teenage injury prevention efforts.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session the participants should be able to 1. describe the essential components of the CeaseFire program as well as identify ways to implement such a program; 2. describe elements of a successful educational intervention; and 3. recognize the policy implications of community-based injury prevention efforts.
