Annual Exploration of Injury Data Issues
This session will continue the tradition of the past decade of APHA meetings, where section members discuss current issues in injury data. The following topic areas will be discussed at length: 1) Violence data - including child death reviews, the National Violent Death Reporting System and its linkage of death certificate data with police and medical examiner data; current efforts to develop instruments for sexual/partner violence surveillance; 2) Severity of injury - including new initiatives to include severity measures in administrative data including ICISS and AIS/ICD. 3) Update from the ICE meeting in June, 2005 in Cuernavaca, Mexico 4) Disaster surveillance - including lessons learned from the tsunami 5) Old business: state by state usage of external cause coding, status of ICD 10 CM; APHA member state efforts to adopt new death certificate form; hospital billing form UB-04 replacing form UB-92; research on medical misadventures.
Learning Objectives: 1) increase data expertise among participants; 2) address difficult issues and explore potential solutions; 3) create networks of those committed to good data.
