Five of the top ten infectious diseases in the world are sexually transmitted, underscoring the immediate need for effective prevention and treatment programs in sexual health. This session addresses some of the barriers to disease prevention in particular populations and also presents findings from research intended to inform new prevention and treatment programs. In the first presentation, Ruth Peterson reports results from study conducted in the United States that is testing the effectiveness of motivational interviewing to improve women’s contraceptive use. In the second presentation, Timothy Frasca recommends that HIV prevention efforts in Latin American countries be combined with reproductive health services to maximize the effectiveness of prevention efforts. Barriers to this type of service integration are discussed. In the third presentation, Alwyn Cohall reports results from an innovative program in New York City using mobile outreach to engage young people in sexual health education and screening. In the final presentation, Diana Laura describes a qualitative study conducted with sex workers in the Dominican Republic. This population may benefit from the use of female-controlled barrier methods. The aim of the study, therefore, is to identify barriers to their use and how to increase acceptability. | |||
