Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders
Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders maintain a holistic view of health. Cultural values, limited island resources, and social support influence health behaviors. This session will describe initiatives to improve the health and well-being of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, both in the Pacific and on the continental United States. National evidence-based practices will be described and adapted to produce models that are more suitable to a holistic view of health. Implications for policy will be described.
Learning Objectives: 1) have a greater understanding of the health issues encountered by Pacific Islanders, 2) identify Pacific Island cultural values that influence health behaviors, and 3) describe programs that have integrated evidence-based practices and indigenous knowledge to promote disease prevention and minimize health risks.
