Exposure to hazardous metals continues to be a public health problem. In this session, a variety of studies and screening programs evaluating the health risk associated metals are explored. Studies featured include exposure evaluations, risk assessments, epidemiologic studies, and screening methods to target high risk populations. Specific presentations include an examination of arsenic exposure to children from chromated copper arsenate treated wood in playgrounds; risk assessment methods examining methyl mercury in seafood; two presentations exploring methods to target populations at risk to hazardous lead levels; and an epidemiological study examining the association of trace metals and dental caries.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will: 1) understand the risk and exposure routes of concern regarding CCA treated wood in playgrounds; 2)be able to calculate the hazard quotient daily exposure from methyl mercury in seafood; 3) learn about using housing indicators to target populations at high risk from lead exposure; and 4) learn about risks associated with trace metals and dental caries.
