The quantity, quality, distribution, and productivity of health workers, both clinical and allied, are fundamental to successful performance of the health care delivery system. Challenges in human resource development persist in most countries, developed and underdeveloped alike. The presentations in this session highlight existing obstacles and promising efforts to address health workforce development Specifically, the presentations will discuss: (1)decentralization of continuing professional education in Albania as a mechanism to achieve sustainable performance improvement and responsiveness; (2) health workforce shortages and imbalances in Africa, and the urgency for policy reform and investment in order to achieve Millennium Development Goals; (3) overcoming human resource constraints in a plan to scale up access to emergency surgery in Uganda; (4) an analysis of the World Bank’s engagement in human resource policy issues in Africa, and perspectives for the future, and (5) a discussion of public health education programs and teaching methodologies in developing country settings. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to (1) identify constraints affecting human resources for health; (2) examine policy and investment needs to redress the health workforce problems in developing countries and (3) describe trends in training and education of health workers. | |||
