HIV prevention is urgently needed in rural Malawi where over 80% of the population resides. Peer groups based on social learning are effective in changing HIV risk behaviors, but have not spread to rural areas due to lack of evidence-based strategies for implementation. A network of respected health workers with strong community ties is already present in rural areas. Using the World Health Organization’s primary health care model, we are mobilizing health workers as HIV prevention leaders using a peer group intervention. The health workers then work with the research team to initiate community peer group interventions for adults and youth. The first presentation describes how we have collaborated with the community of health workers, village leaders and rural adults and adolescents to develop this program of rural HIV prevention.
Learning Objectives: 1. To identify the importance of building an evidence base for the content and delivery mechanisms of an HIV prevention intervention. 2. To describe how a research project has collaborated with health workers and the community to develop an evidence base for a peer group intervention for HIV prevention in rural Malawi.
