Artificial, “sculptured,” nails have gained considerable popularity in the U.S. There were an estimated 372,000 licensed nail technicians in 2003, compared to 190,000 in 1993. Nail technicians who apply artificial nails are exposed to a wide variety of toxic substances, most of which are typically used in an industrial setting. Commonly-used chemicals in nail salons can cause nervous system, reproductive and skin damage, respiratory illness and cancer. Furthermore, since many nail technicians are immigrants with limited English-speaking ability, outreach and training to this population presents a considerable challenge. This workshop will include presentations on a training and outreach program among the Vietnamese immigrant workers in California, a health and exposure survey of a similar population in Boston, an overview of the EPA’s Nail Salon Project in the southwest, a survey of phthalate exposure among manicurists and an overview of the public health response to nail salon hazards.
Learning Objectives: Participants of this workshop will learn about the health hazards of nail salon workers and the public health actions being taken to control and eliminate these hazards. Participants will be able to describe the population at risk, the health hazards that they encounter at work, the efforts to train them on nail salon hazards and the response by government at the local, state and federal levels. At the conclusion of the workshop the participant will be able to list three of the more hazaardous chemicals in nail salon work, describe popular education techniques used to teach nail salon workers, and describe three of the obstacles to a healthy nail salon work environment.
