Accreditation of Public Health Worskite Town Hall Meeting: Exploring Accreditation Poject
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) will host an informational session to present the Exploring Accreditation Project and gather valuable public comment from APHA’s annual meeting participants. ASTHO and NACCHO are collaborating on a project to examine the implications and feasibility of a voluntary national public health accreditation system. Upon completion, the project will produce definitive recommendations for how a system of public health standards can be established and whether to move forward with implementation. This session will provide an opportunity for interested public health professionals and consumers to share thoughts, concerns and experiences around accreditation of local and state public health agencies. The input gathered will be shared with the Steering Committee and work groups developing a design for a national system. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Exploring Accreditation project was developed as a result of a 2002 Institute of Medicine report that called on the public health community to consider how accreditation could improve the nation’s health. This project will address the following issues: · Governance structures. · Roles of federal, state, and local public health entities. · Financing. · Research and evaluation components. This year-long process will build on the experiences of professionals at every level of public health practice to study the viability of a voluntary national accreditation system. A Planning Committee composed of the senior executives of APHA, ASTHO, NACCHO, and the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) supports and coordinates the work of a 25-member Steering Committee and four workgroups. The Steering Committee includes representatives from: · APHA · ASTHO · CDC · HRSA - Health Resources and Services Administration · IHS - Indian Health Service · NACCHO · NALBOH · NIHB - National Indian Health Board · NNPHI - National Network of Public Health Institutes · PHF - Public Health Foundation · PHLS - Public Health Leadership Society The workgroups – governance and implementation, standards development, financing and incentives, and research and evaluation – will address issues related to establishing an accreditation system and report their findings back to the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will also be informed by public comment via the Web and public meetings such as this one. The project will be completed in August 2006.
