Gloria Ann Simpson, MA, Robin A. Cohen, PhD, Patricia Pastor, PhD, and Cynthia A. Reuben, MA. National Center for Health Statistics, CDC, 3311 Toledo Road, Room 2122, Hyattsville, MD 20782, 301-458-4502, gas4@cdc.gov

In the 2005 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), an on-going annual household survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, parents answered questions about the child's health and health care, including new questions on mental health services and use of medication. This paper has three objectives: 1) to examine the socio-demographic characteristics of the approximately the 600 children 4 to 17 years of age identified as ever having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 2) to describe the utilization of mental health services by children with ADHD, and 3) to assess the impact of ADHD on the child, his/her family life, friendships, leisure pursuits, and learning. Mental health services include whether the child had contact with a health provider or school professional, whether he/she ever took prescription medicine, whether he/she took prescription medicine for ADHD, whether he/she received any other type of treatment, and where the child received treatment when he/she received treatment other than medication. Preliminary data indicate that approximately 6% of U. S. children 4 to 17 years of age were identified as ever having ADHD, and approximately 4.3% have taken medication for difficulties with concentration, hyperactivity or impulsivity
