The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the federal agency responsible for preservation of and access to the permanently valuable records of the federal government. The Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division has custody of the permanently valuable computerized records of federal agencies transferred to NARA for long-term preservation. The Division has many computerized data sets from over 100 federal agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. These data sets were created as part of surveys, administrative databases, and other data collection efforts. A comprehensive listing of data sets in the custody of the Division that are relevant to public health research will be provided. Members of the public can obtain copies of data sets (and associated documentation) on a cost-recovery basis on removable media. The procedure for obtaining data sets from the Division will be described.
