Objective: This study examined trends in ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality rates in Canada from 1986 to 2000.

Methods: Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) were computed using the 1991 Canadian population as the standard. The study population included Canadians aged 35 and over. Linear regression was used to calculate average annual percentage change (AAPC) by age, sex and province.

Results: For the entire 1986-2000 period, the overall ASMRs of IHD for Canadians aged 35 and over were 438.99 per 100,000 among males and 226.81 per 100,000 among females. The highest provincial rates during this period were found among men and women in Newfoundland. A substantial decrease in mortality rates was observed in those aged 35 and over for both sexes; the AAPC indicated a decline of 3.44% for men and 3.42% for women. The ASMRs were plotted for three time periods. The rates increased with each successive age group and decreased with each consecutive time period for both sexes. For each age group, the lowest ASMRs occurred in the most recent time period (1996-2000) among both genders. The highest rate was observed among aged 85 or over; the AAPC showed a significant decline were only 1.7% and 2.0% among men and women respectively.

Conclusion: The results provide scientific evidence on Enhanced IHD control strategies to target the Canadian populations.
