Celebrating 10 years as an official section: The history of chiropractic within the APHA, 1984-2005

Jonathon Todd Egan, New York Chiropractic College, 2360 State Route 89, Seneca Falls, NY 13148, 315 237 1324, j.t.egan@gmail.com, Rand Baird, DC, MPH, World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), 1246 Yonge St. #203, Toronto, ON M4T 1W5, Canada, and Lisa Z. Killinger, DC, Research, Palmer College of Chiropractic, 741 Brady St., Davenport, IA 52803.

In 1987, Herbert Vear, D.C. published a history of the reversal of the American Public Health Association's (APHA) official policy against chiropractic. Much has happened in the 2 decades since that article was published. Events in those years contributed to World Health Organization acknowledgement of the World Federation of Chiropractic, the publication of chiropractic-authored articles in the prestigious American Journal of Public Health, the service of chiropractors in executive roles within the APHA, and now the 10th anniversary of the Chiropractic Health Care (CHC) Section in 2005. A detailed history of the CHC was assembled in commemoration of those 20 years and this 10th anniversary. This presentation highlights the work of chiropractors over the past 2 decades as chronicled in that history. This presentation further outlines the formation and work of the CHC, the results of service within the APHA, and acknowledges accomplishments reached – while looking to future work and present needs. This presentation provides the history of chiropractic within the APHA from 1984-2005, and celebrates 10 years as an official Section.
