Issues: HIV research, no matter how innovative, will never make a difference in the epidemic unless it is disseminated in an appropriate and timely manner to the people and organizations providing HIV services. Yet most researchers are not trained, rewarded or supported to disseminate research findings beyond academic journals. Description: The Community Advisory Board (CAB) of the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS), University of California San Francisco, has long recognized this problem and strived to help encourage and guide CAPS researchers in expanding their dissemination efforts. The CAPS CAB underwent a year-long process of interviewing researchers and service providers to develop “Recommendations for Research Dissemination” Lessons Learned: 1) All research projects should include a dissemination plan that clearly states a timeline, budget, audiences and products. 2) Disseminate, where appropriate, basic descriptions of studies, recruitment, demographics of participants, baseline data, instruments, curricula, conference presentations, interesting findings and final study results. 3) Disseminate positive, negative and null results. 4) Disseminate to: a) Study participants, using multiple methods and paying attention to language and literacy needs. b) Service agencies, emphasizing the practical implications of the research. c) General community and policymakers. Recommendations: The CAPS CAB-generated “Recommendations for Research Dissemination” has been accepted by the leadership of CAPS and presented to researchers. CAPS provided training, support and review of dissemination plans through writing retreats for researchers. The CAB also sent the Recommendations to other research institutes, funders and service agencies to encourage their participation and support in the dissemination of research.
