Putting prevention into practice: Nutrition and healthy aging

Lisa Z. Killinger, DC, Research, Palmer College of Chiropractic, 741 Brady St., Davenport, IA 52803, 563-884-5902, Lisa.Killinger@palmer.edu

Healthy aging is intimately intertwined with lifestyle choices and one important piece of the healthy aging puzzle is nutrition. This presentation will review the recommendations of the Clinician's Guide to Preventive Services and the Healthy People 2010 document, and offer a summary of evidence-based nutritional recommendations for the prevention of disease and promotion of health in older adults. Specific information will be offered related to the health professional's role in the prevention of several leading causes of mortality and morbidity in aging patients. Topics will include nutritional considerations related to heart disease, hypertension stroke, cancers, and osteoporosis and steps towards the practical implementation of such considerations in practice.

The role of antioxidants, vitamins, and mineral supplements in health has been a prominent feature in recent scientific publications. This literature will be reviewed related to cardiovascular and bone health. Recent literature related to Omega 3 fatty acids and “trans fats” will also be explored, while identifying opportunities for providers to engage patients in making better nutritional choices.

For common age-related cancers, such as breast, prostate, and colon cancer, evidence-based prevention recommendations generally include nutritional advice, as reflected in the nutritional recommendations recently developed by the American Cancer Society. Scientifically sound patient education tools and resources will be presented to help health professionals achieve success in promoting sound nutritional health practices in their aging patients.
