As part of a larger project, we conducted 2 focus groups to investigate stakeholder and practitioner concerns regarding the implementation of best practice guidelines and practice parameters for the use of spinal manipulation in the treatment of low back pain. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling strategy. One focus group was comprised of stakeholders serving in leadership positions in specific areas, including: policy, research, academia, academic administration, insurance, or managed care. The second focus group was comprised of individuals who currently practice as chiropractic clinicians and serve in a leadership capacity within a chiropractic organization. The participants from each group were asked a list of semi-structured interview questions. The narratives were transcribed verbatim and provided the primary source data for the study. We analyzed the narrative data by first identifying key categories and then by identifying themes that ran throughout the narratives. In this session, we will report the results of the study and discuss the issues involved in the implementation of best practice recommendations for the chiropractic profession. We will also discuss the literature relating to effectiveness and efficiency of various forms of implementation strategies.
