Training the next generation in best practices in eliminating health disparities: A master's level fellowship training program

Project EXPORT of the University of Arizona, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH), Center for Health Equality is one of 23 National Institutes of Health funded Centers of Excellence. A component of Project EXPORT is its fellowship training program that focuses on master level graduate student training. Fellows are trained in areas of diabetes and substance prevention and research to reduce health disparities among American Indians and Hispanics. Twenty fellows are selected from MEZCOPH Public Health and Epidemiology programs, and Mexican American Studies, Latino Health track. Between AY 2003 - 2006, 66 fellowships have been granted, producing 18 graduates with an MPH or an MS in Latino Health, and a student seeking an MPH after completing an MS in Mexican American Studies, Latino Health. Two former fellows are continuing on with a PhD in Epidemiology and Family Studies respectively, an additional student is continuing a dual degree program in medicine and public health. Fellows participate in academic work, current research, community outreach, and cultural competency training. Individual fellows contribute a minimum of 600 community outreach and research hours, enroll in a 3 unit graduate course created to address health disparities issues in American Indian and Hispanic communities, and participate in workshop series that address minority health issues and best practices in public health. Fellows work on ongoing projects with Project EXPORT community partners located on the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona and in Southside Tucson.
