Su-I. Hou, DrPH, RN, CHES, Health Promotion and Behavior, University of Georgia, 309 Ramsey Center, 300 River Road, Athens, GA 30602, 706-542-8206, shou@uga.edu

Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) is a method that challenges students to learn and work in groups to seek solutions to real world problems. Connecting academic study with community-based learning (CBL) experience can contribute to student learning that is deeper and longer-lasting. This session will discuss the unique way of integrating PBL with CBL to engage MPH students in designing and pilot testing tailored health promotion interventions. Methods: Real world scenarios were used in student-lead group discussions (PBL). These scenarios were part of their group projects formed through partnership with neighborhood communities (CBL). Using the “core process” described in a program planning framework called “Intervention Mapping”; students integrate theories and evidence, and interact with partnered communities to develop tailored interventions and materials. Through guided steps, students using PBL process to identify pertinent determinants, change objectives, methods and strategies, and pilot-test program component(s) they developed with community partners. Results: Students commented that (1) the PBL discussions were very helpful and interactive, it allowed for better understanding and opportunities for questions; (2) the community-based experience helped them truly realize and experience the importance of listening to community early and regularly, (3) the entire experience increased collective creativity and forced constant dialogue, which resulted in different perspectives and enhanced projects, and (4) the course design facilitated internalized learning outcome and increased self-efficacy. Conclusions: The innovations in education provided valuable learning experience for the students and resulted in theory- and evidence-informed intervention plans tailored for the communities.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to
