Advancing a national reproductive justice agenda for Latinas

Angela Diane Hooton, JD, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, 50 Broad Street, Suite 1825, New York, NY 10004, 212-422-2553, angela@latinainstitute.org

The mission of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) is to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health care for Latinas, their families and communities. Using a reproductive justice model, which draws from the human rights' principle that health care is a basic human right, NLIRH is engaged at the national level in policy advocacy, community mobilization and public education. Our work is rooted in an awareness of the connections between the different systems of oppression that contribute to the reproductive health disparities facing Latinas. In order to guide our advocacy and organizing work, NLIRH has developed a model national policy agenda that addresses the broad range of reproductive health challenges facing Latinas today. Our National Latina Agenda for Reproductive Justice is framed around the following priority issues for Latinas: increasing access to affordable healthcare; ensuring the availability of culturally and linguistically competent health care services; expanding family planning options, promoting comprehensive sexuality education, protecting our reproductive rights, and developing accurate and unbiased research on the health status of Latinas. We are currently engaged in campaigns to ensure Latina immigrants have access to reproductive health care services, including abortion access. In this presentation we will highlight our programs to demonstrate how we apply the reproductive justice framework at a practical level in our advocacy work. Our goal of this session is to provide a model for advocacy and community mobilization in a more diverse and inclusive reproductive justice movement.
