Walking through Plain Talk and building a national replication model

Tammi Fleming, MPH, Replication and Expansion, Public/Private Ventures, 2000 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 215-557-4487, tfleming@ppv.org

Launched by the Annie E. Casey Foundation as a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative, Plain Talk was implemented in five cities across the nation. This community-driven approach addressed adolescent reproductive health issues including the prevention of teen pregnancy, STIs and HIV/AIDS. By working with the community to improve the quality and consistency of adult/teen communication and increase sexually active teens' access to reproductive health services, Plain Talk was especially successful in Latino and African American communities.

The budget limitation and varied strategies used by the various sites made it difficult for Plain Talk to be sustained or replicated. Thus the Casey Foundation commissioned a Replication Assessment to strategically address issues of funding, sustainability and its validity in most community settings. This assessment streamlined the model, identified and named the core components, set an implementation timeframe and financial structure, which would maintain model fidelity and sustainability.

This session will focus in on the role of Public/Private Ventures as a National intermediary for the program beginning with the Replication Assessment.
