Plain Talk: Replicating success of an adult/teen communication strategy that addresses adolescent reproductive health issues

Sarabeth Shreffler, MPH, Replication and Expansion, Public/Private Ventures, 2000 Market Street, Suite 600, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 215-557-4483, sshreffler@ppv.org

Developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Plain Talk is a community driven strategy addressing adolescent reproductive health issues including teen pregnancy, STIs and HIV/AIDS. This model has proven effective in African American and Latino communities, by working with adults to improve adult communication with teens and increase teens' access to contraceptive services. After successful evaluation findings, Public Private Ventures (P/PV) has taken on the role to develop and implement a national replication strategy which includes a structure for Monitoring and evaluation, Training & Technical Assistance, and Funding & Policy Supports for all implementing sites. The replication assessment streamlined the model and identified core components for duplicating the results identified in the evaluation.

In order to successfully demonstrate the program is applicable to various communities, a comprehensive and universal data collection system was established. This system consists of collecting site specific data on community demographic health indicators, community attitudes and perceptions regarding adolescent reproductive health, inventories of access to contraceptives, and service provider patient profiles and institutional perceived gaps in adolescent reproductive health care at baseline and follow-up. A website designed for the sites monitors consistency and fidelity through process evaluation techniques such as an interactive online journal and regular data entry and quarterly reports.

In addition, sites are encouraged to tailor their evaluation results by collecting qualitative data through ethnography and focus groups.
