John M. Shandra, PhD, Sociology, State University of New York at Stony Brook, 655 Belle Terre Road #3, Port Jefferson, NY 11777, 617-794-2810, jshandra@notes.cc.sunysb.edu

This study presents cross-national models of infant mortality. In doing so, I test hypotheses drawn from four different theoretical perspectives using panel regression for a sample of 100 nations. My preliminary results replicate the findings of prior research in that gross national product reduces infant mortality. In subsequent analyses, I include interaction terms that suggest economic dependency relationships based upon exports, multinational corporations, and international financial institutions increase infant mortality more in repressive nations than in democratic nations. I conclude with some brief policy recommendations, implications for theory, and directions for future research.
