The USAID-funded Healthy Women in Georgia Project, which is implemented by JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. in conjunction with partner organizations, seeks to improve women's health in Georgia. In order to improve the quality of health services for women, Child Rights Protection Association CLARITAS XXI, one of the partner organizations, has implemented a program integrating family planning services within seven children's outpatient clinics in the Tbilisi region. By providing family planning services in these clinics, the program aims to increase women's knowledge of various family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) issues (i.e. breastfeeding, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and birth spacing issues). Program activities include: family planning trainings for pediatricians; FP/RH counseling of mothers by trained pediatricians; distribution of informational materials at the clinics; and informing patients of a free hotline telephone service on FP/RH. The Client Exit Interviews have shown evidence of early success. Mother's awareness of contraceptive methods have significantly increased: Condom (65% to 85%); IUD (30 % to 60%); COC (10% to 75 %); LAM (25% to 95 %); Spermicids (30% to 75 %); Implants (5% to 25%); Natural methods (10% to 55%); and Injectable contraceptives (5% to 35%). These preliminary results demonstrate the necessity and effectiveness of integrating FP/RH counseling within the pediatricians practices in order to increase health knowledge among women.
