Christine Rosheim, DDS, MPH and Joan Cioffi, PhD, MPH. Office of Workforce and Career Development, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road NE, Mailstop E-95, Atlanta, GA 30333, 404-498-6497, cxr5@cdc.gov

Enhancing the education of the medical community about population health, the public health system, prevention, and the role of physicians in public health is a well-recognized need. At present there are limited opportunities for medical students to benefit from experiential learning in public health settings and for the academic medical and public health practice communities to work together on education agendas. In order to improve the public health workforce and strengthen public health practice, as well as to enhance population-based medical education, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) support the Regional Medicine Public Health Education Centers (RMPHEC) Project through their cooperative agreement.

In 2004, seven medical schools were selected to receive funding to establish RMPHECs. The RMPHECs were required to partner with a local and/or state health agency to improve public health/population health education for their medical students at all levels. A number of competency-based courses, unique practica settings, opportunities for student research, innovative case studies and other products have been developed. “Lessons learned” and outcomes from these initial seven projects will also be discussed in this presentation, as well as the activities of the five RMPHECs selected in 2006. RMPHECs are expected to work with health departments to integrate population health concepts and principles into their standard curriculum, share their experiences with one another, and participate in evaluations of the overall project.
