Box 997413, MS 7206, Sacramento, CA 95899, Reginald Ho, MD, Straub Hospital, 44-588 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kaneohe, HI 96744, and Susan Shinagawa, Asian and Pacific Islander Cancer Education Materials Web Portal, 9158 Camino Lago Vista, Spring Valley, CA 91977.

The Asian and Pacific Islander Cancer Education Materials (APICEM) web portal was created because there had been no single web address that health care providers or community based organizations wanting to serve Asian and Pacific Islander English-limited patients could go and retrieve what might be approved items on cancer education topics in lay terms in a variety of Asian and Pacific Islander languages or materials that had been specifically designed to be culturally competent (as in the case of materials for English-speaking Native Hawaiians). Thus, through the encouragement and support of the National Cancer Institute's Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities, committed individuals and organizations gathered to design a single web portal. While work had been on-going for years, Sep 2005 represents the official commencement for APICEM. Between then and March 2006, the emphasis has been on populating the web portal and in March 2006, the portal has been publicized through a variety of media channels. Besides the notable technical aspects of the portal, the significance of APICEM lies in the collaboration forged involving the NCI's funded community networks targeting Asian and Pacific Islanders, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, and an impressive group of organizations who have joined together to make APICEM a success. The oral presentation will feature a demonstration of APICEM's capabilities.
