Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are among the leading known preventable causes of mental retardation and birth defects. FASDs are 100% avoidable when women do not consume alcohol during pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities is working with the National FIMR Program (NFIMR) to develop and implement a new, community based FIMR review of cases focused on understanding why women continue to drink during pregnancy and improving services and resources for women who are at risk to deliver an infant with FASD. Two FIMR programs located with the Detroit City Health Department and MedChi in Baltimore, Maryland are currently piloting this adaptation of FIMR. This poster will present the initial outcomes of these reviews including FIMR actions taken to screen for alcohol use during pregnancy; implement pregnant women's programs for alcohol cessation or pre-pregnancy contraceptive use; and improve women's health and systems of care and community resources focusing on women's alcohol cessation. The benefits of conducting these targeted reviews and the characteristics of the at-risk women will also be described.Lessons learned from this pilot will be used to aid other FIMR projects across the nation that wish to address FASD.
