When success of an academic nursing center isn't sufficient to survive

Nancy L. Rothman, EdD, RN1, Donna L. Brian, PhD, RN2, Rita Lourie, MSN, MPH, RN1, and Elaine R. Fox, MA3. (1) Department of Nursing, College of Health Professions, Temple University, 3307 N. Broad Street 602-00, Philadelphia, PA 19140, 215-707-5436, rothman@temple.edu, (2) PHMC Health Connection, 1035 West Berks Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122, (3) Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, 260 S. Broad Street 18th floor, Philadelphia, PA 19102

The major focus of the presentation will be the seamless transition of a nurse-managed primary care practice from a University to within a not for profit public health agency, to ensure long term sustainability. This transition was shaped by agreements that allow the community-served, the Department of Nursing, the College of Health Professions and the University to continue to benefit from practice related service, education and research opportunities in primary care, health promotion and disease prevention. The issues addressed in the numerous agreements, the negotiations toward consensus and the involvement of the Community Advisory Board will be shared. Without the transition, the primary care practice within this academic nursing center created by a response to a request for proposals from the Division of Nursing within the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Research and Service Administration would be closing.
