The purpose of this research is to determine the factors affecting low birth weight of the pregnant that are examined in Baºkent University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. Our study population was 1911 pregnant who were examined and analyzed by triple research test and by direct amniocentesis at second trimester in Baºkent University Hospital between May 1997 and January 2004. Of the searched women, the mean age was 28.8±4.9, gravid rum was 1.8±1.0 and parity was 0.5±0.6. Of the searched newborns, the mean birth weight was assessed as 3270±493.7 gr. The factors affecting the birth weight are; age of mother OR: 0.916(95 % CI 0.863-0.973), gestational week (week of birth) OR: 0.498(95 % CI 0.428-0.586), smoking OR: 2.640(95 % CI 22.36-938.1), complication in gestation OR: 144.8(95 % CI 122.36-938.1) and pregnancy with the assisted reproduction techniques OR: 3.301(95 % CI 1.068-10.206). Regarding the pregnancy complications, it was found that 18.3 % of our pregnant women had any type of pregnancy complications while the most frequent complication was gestational diabetes mellitus. The logistic regression analysis was applied in order to determine the factors affecting the pregnancy complications and only the age of mother had been found statistical significant. (OR: 1.042(95 % 1.009-1.076). According to our research's results, the age of mother and gestational week have affirmative effects on low birth weight. On the other hand, smoking addict of mother, having a complication during pregnancy and pregnancy with assisted reproduction techniques are risk factors of low birth weight.
