Tammy Vehige, MEd, CHES, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Boston University, 715 Albany Street, 580 3rd Floor, Boston, MA 02118, 617-414-8431, tvehige@bu.edu and Sarah Martin, PhD, Physical Activity and Health Branch, CDC, 4770 Buford Hwy MS k 46, Atlanta, GA 30341.

Community engagement is considered a cornerstone of public health and can result in long-term health outcomes. Therefore, engaging stakeholders is critical when addressing physical activity, a Leading Health Indicator (HP 2010), because it is affected by, and can affect, many aspects of the community. Physical activity is causally linked to an array of health benefits. While it may not be the primary focus, it is likely associated with the priority issue.

This presentation will propose a model for Community-Based Approach to Physical Activity. This model combines the principles of community engagement with the principles of sound planning and evaluation. The model can be used by state and local public health agencies as they collaborate with communities to promote physical activity among residents. This community-based approach is based on a multi-step process through which community stakeholders are brought together to identify and prioritize their community's needs and objectives, develop the confidence and will to tackle them, find necessary resources, and take action.

The model is divided into two sections. Phase 1 focuses on the community as a whole; Phase 2 guides the process of individual work groups. This two-pronged structure allows communities to address a range of activities that support an overall community goal. The model is intended as a framework - not a prescriptive formula. The steps in the model represent ongoing, iterative endeavors. Each builds on previous one(s) and can affect the community's immediate success and future efforts.
