Maternal and child health issues: Post hurricane Katrina experiences from Mississippi

Daniel Bender, MHS, Health Services, Mississippi Department of Health, PO Box 1700, Jackson, MS 39215-1700, 601-576-7465, daniel.bender@msdh.state.ms.us

Background: Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the southeastern United States, including the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast in August 2005. Forty-nine of Mississippi's 82 counties were included in the federal disaster area. In early September 2005, about 45,000 families were displaced in Mississippi and 13,700 evacuees resided in registered Mississippi shelters. Currently, about 510,000 disaster victims from Mississippi have registered for FEMA assistance. Like other disasters, mothers and children were among the worst affected. Discussion: Between August 2005 and November 2005, the MCH staff, along with the Office of Protection and Office of Epidemiology from Mississippi Department of Health, worked with local shelters to make women and children the priority on receiving medical services and food supplies. Moreover, the fight to stay ahead of infection, an absolute necessity in temporary shelters, met with success in Mississippi. Extraordinary efforts have resulted in over 143,872 tetanus, 30,937 Hepatitis A, 10,485 Twinrix, and 9,630 flu vaccinations. In addition, the Mississippi Department of Health simplified WIC application and distribution procedures in the affected areas, speeding up delivery of nutritional food to needy women and infants. Overall, the needs of Mississippi's women and children affected by hurricane Katrina have been met.
