Research has demonstrated the benefits that physical activity and recreation afford persons with disabilities and chronic health conditions. The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD), a national electronic resource center on disability and physical activity-related information, serves to contribute to this goal through many channels, one being a consumer request service system. This system includes determination of the consumer's needs; provision of information on physical activity programming, fitness, recreation, and/or sports; and the availability of web-based tools for the consumer to organize, track, and develop a personal training program.
Randomly-selected consumers were asked to rate the quality of services received regarding their information request, and their frequency of physical activity performed at the initial request and at quarterly follow-ups. It will be demonstrated how consumer satisfaction and frequency of physical activity performed, based on request type and disability/chronic health condition, can be used as indicators to build a more responsive consumer request service system about the programs, services, and equipment in fitness and recreation which are currently available for persons with disabilities and chronic health conditions. Lessons learned in developing this system, as well as continual website resource development activities will be discussed.
