Michael Ballard, EdD, Bethany Miller, PhD, Derek Holcomb, PhD, and Vickie Sanchez, PhD. Health Promotion and Administration, Eastern Kentucky University, 420 Begley Building, 521 Lancaster Avenue, Richmond, KY 40475, 859-622-1684, michael.ballard@eku.edu

During the Fall 2005 semester, 2516 undergraduate students, faculty and staff from a large southeastern university completed a survey focusing on involvement with tobacco products and attitudes toward various additional restrictions to the current university smoking policy. Of the 2516 completed surveys, 61.6% were students, 24.8% were staff and 12.6% were faculty. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between support for a more restrictive smoking policy and selected behavioral and demographic characteristics. Examination of the results indicated that greater support for more restrictive smoking policy attributes was consistently reported by nonsmokers, females and faculty. For example, 62.4% of females reported that they agreed that the use of tobacco products should be prohibited within 25 feet of all campus buildings compared to 51.6% of males (p< .05). Regarding smoking status, 83.1% of nonsmokers reported that they were concerned about the possible health risks to which they are exposed relating to the use of tobacco products on campus compared to 20.1% of smokers (p< .05). Finally, faculty were more likely to support a monetary fine for violating any revised tobacco policy (69.6%) compared to 50.2% of staff and 55.5% of students (p< .05).
