Despite the ethnic difference, Korea has adapted the American reference standard of the blood pressure (BP) in Korean children and adolescents. There has not been a reference standard of blood pressure in Korean children based on a nationwide survey. The purpose of this study is to establish the Korean reference standard of blood pressure through 2005 Korean National Survey of Children and Adolescents. Nationwide survey of 50,409 boys and girls aged from 7 to 18 was performed. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP) were measured using DINAMAP ProCare 100 (GE Co., Ltd.). The mean SBPs in 7 year-old boys and girls were 102.9 (±10.4) mmHg and 99.9 (±10.5) mmHg, respectively. The mean SBPs in 13 year-old boys and girls were 114.0(±12.1) mmHg and 107.9 (±10.7) mmHg, respectively. The mean DBPs were 58.5 (±7.3) mmHg for 7 year-old boys and 57.9 (±7.4) mmHg for 7 year-old girls. The mean DBPs in 13 year-old-boys and girls were 61.6 (±7.6) mmHg and 60.9 (±7.4) mmHg, respectively. It is essential to establish the definition of standard blood pressure in children and adolescents and update clinicians regarding blood pressure in children. This is the first study in Korea to assess nationwide BP so as to establish the reference standard BP in children and adolescents.
