Steven Szydlowski, MBA, MHA, Health Administration and Human Resources, University of Scranton, 413 McGurrin Hall, Scranton, PA 18510, 570 941 4367, sjs14@scranton.edu and Peter Amato, Inner Harmony Group, 743 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 104, Scranton, PA 18510.

The New Beginnings Cancer Care Program: Phase II used in this study compares and contrasts Phase I of the study. The integrative medicine practices in this study help patients cope and develop their quality of life with cancer. The Phase II pilot study utilizes three modalities in conjunction with conventional, western medicine. The modalities used include therapeutic massage, reiki, and a mind-body skills group. As a result of the New Beginnings Program Phase II, the researchers measure quality of life changes in cancer patients and provide strategies for overcoming barriers that were presented in Phase I to include, but not limited to, physician support and advocacy for the program, participant recruitment, and community awareness. Lessons learned from Phase I of the study will also be reviewed to show how they were used to enhance Phase II of the study. The authors will also talk about the human rights implications on cancer patients when options for alternative and complementary medicine are not made available by providers.
