Improving the Scholarship of Research of Chiropractic faculty
Research has become a highly valued activity for chiropractic faculty. As part of the faculty role in higher education, promotion and tenure are tied to the scholarship of research. Yet many schools of chiropractic do not have a well-developed research capacity of faculty members. This might be due to the lack of knowledge and skills required to competently engage in a research program of their own or to guide and inspire students to pursue a research career.
With an increased demand on the emphasis of evidence based health care by all the stake holders, there seems to be a general interest in the profession towards scholarship and research. Answering some of the foundational questions of the field and contributing to its evolving shape is a necessary step to develop one's own professional identity as well as for the growth and development of the chiropractic profession as a whole.
This paper is an attempt to evaluate the factors that impact faculty scholarship and suggest possible steps to more aggressively promote research, and make faculty think more intensively about the scholarship of research. An attempt will be also made to discuss the challenges of developing strategies for promoting faculty research and advice for beginning researchers.
