Julian Chow, PhD and Melissa Martin-Mollard, MSW. School of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley, 120 Haviland Hall, MC7400, Berkeley, CA 94720-7400, 510-643-9288, jchow99@berkeley.edu

Asian American is a diverse population composed of many distinct ethnic sub-groups. However, little is known about how insurance status affects health care use among various Asian groups. We examine: 1) Does insurance status and type of plan vary by immigrant status and ethnicity? 2) Are there subgroup differences in using public or community clinics, having received some kind of primary health care in the past 12 months, and experiencing a delay in receiving necessary medical care or medication?

A total of 4,039 adult respondents including 1,264 Chinese, 689 Filipino, 492 Korean, and 470 Vietnamese were studied. Statistical analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between ethnic subgroups and insurance status, insurance type, lapse in coverage, usual source of care, health status, health care use, and experiencing a delay in receiving medical care.

Access to health care among immigrants is a major concern for service providers and policy makers. It is crucial to better understand cultural, linguistic and geographic barrier to service use if programs are to be effective. This study will help to increase knowledge in these areas for Asian immigrants.
