Background/Purpose: Men as Navigators (MAN) for Health is a CDC-funded, community-based participatory research lay health advisor (LHA) intervention trial, designed to improve men's preventive health behaviors and use of preventive health services. LHA intervention and evaluation activities are occurring with African American and Latino men in one urban and two rural communities of North Carolina. The purpose of this paper is to present intervention products to recruit, train, and engage African American and Latino LHAs, called Navigators: Project Coordinator Training Manual, Navigator Training Manual, and Learning Circle Activities, which were informed by the concepts of “male gender socialization” and “Triple Quandary,”

Methods: MAN for Health is governed by an Advisory Council, representing the eight partners: two academic institutions, three health departments, and three community-based organizations. The Council reviewed and approved all intervention products, developed and implemented by the partners. To monitor and document the degree of implementation fidelity to the intended intervention design, an observation checklist and semi-structured debriefings were used.

Results: To illustrate results from the observations and debriefings, we will show relevant modules from the Project Coordinator Training Manual, the Navigator Training Manual, and Learning Circles. In addition, gender differences in the roles of men as LHAs, raised by the partners, and how they were addressed by MAN, will be discussed.
