The Healthy Vision Community Awards Program is intended to stimulate community initiatives in health promotion and disease prevention that support the vision objectives of Healthy People 2010 and the Healthy People 2010 goal to reduce health disparities. The Awards provide funds to community-based organizations to support local efforts to raise awareness about eye health issues, including diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, low vision services, and early detection of eye disease in children. Through a variety of activities, awardees aim to combat preventable vision loss in their communities by spotlighting the importance of blindness prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. All of these activities mirror vision objectives outlined in Healthy People 2010, the Nation's health promotion and disease prevention agenda. Over the past four years, 182 programs have been funded. Highlights of funded projects will be presented along with specific examples of effective community-based programs. A new database of eye health community programs will be shown so that participants will have access to model eye health programs that can be replicated in other communities.
