Health system approaches for reaching low socioeconomic status women & girls

Nancy J. Kaufman, RN, MS, Aurora Health Care, 3000 West Montana Street, Milwaukee, WI 53215, 414-647-6479, nancy.kaufman@aurora.org

Although research exists to support tobacco control policies, such as increasing the price of tobacco products and creating smoke free work and community spaces, little is known about their specific impact on women and girls of low SES. This lack of research stimulated the National Cancer Institute and the American Legacy Foundation to sponsor the Tobacco Research network on Disparities and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Office on Women's Health to sponsor an invitational meeting to examine the effects of policies on low SES women and girls.

This session reviews the potential policy changes that may be necessary to reach this special population, with an emphasis on increasing their access to tobacco education, advice to quit, and treatment within the health care delivery system.

Recommendations from the papers and dialogue at the national meeting that are especially applicable to health care delivery settings will be shared. The tobacco care management/quality initiative at Aurora Health Care ( a large, integrated health care and preventive health delivery system in Wisconsin) will be described. Data from evaluation of the initiative will be presented, including process and patient outcomes.
