Data triangulation tool: Use in a mixed method research analysis and presentation of a community assessment

Marsha A. Hughes-Gay, RN, BSN, Eleanor S. Johnson, RN, BSN, and Elizabeth Rearick, RN, BSN. School of Nursing, Community Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Program, Indiana University, 1133 S. Harbour Drive, Noblesville, IN 46062, 317-278-3834, mhughesg@iupui.edu

When conducting a community assessment, large amounts of data, both qualitative and quantitative are collected for analysis. Data collation is tedious and time consuming. This poster describes how Master's level students in a Community Health Clinical Nurse Specialist program, with anticipated graduation dates in 2007 and 2008, used a mixed methods research approach in collecting and analyzing community assessment data and the use of a data triangulation tool in order to facilitate the organization of the information collected from a Midwestern diverse population. In a joint project, students from the Indiana University School of Nursing BSN and MSN programs conducted a community survey in the northwest quadrant of Marion County, Indiana. Data was obtained from primary and secondary sources including focus groups, key informant interviews, and a mailed survey sent to two census tracts with vulnerable populations. The Community Health MSN students were responsible for data analysis and the presentation of the data to the Community Steering Committee. Data triangulation of the mixed methods research was accomplished with the use of a visual tool. This tool enabled researchers to compile mixed method data from a variety of sources to better validate emerged themes from the assessment. In keeping with the core values of community based participatory research, the goal was to provide results of the research to the community stakeholders for their review. The tool provided a visual means of presenting multiple sources of data into a single form for each theme. The tool also provided an effective means to compile large amounts of data in a short time frame and enhance presentation to community stakeholders.
