Para Todos: An ideal tool to build capacity among Latino-serving community-based organizations (CBOs)

Emily Glazer, MS, CHES and Margaret Behrns, MA. University Research Corporation, 11420 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852, 240-747-4863, eglazer@health.org

Building on 8 years of experience developing bilingual substance abuse prevention materials for Latino audiences, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created an ideal tool to help CBOs meet the critical skill and information needs of Latino communities––the Para Todos DVD/VHS.

The purpose of this session is to share lessons learned about how the Latino community uses health communication materials; the unique needs of Latino-serving providers; and how to meet those needs through the development of materials that are relevant, culturally competent, and appropriate in format and flexibility. Session participants will learn how to present messages in ways that address various learning styles, integrate opportunities for guided group discussion and activities, create a product that can be used in a variety of settings, and use a Web site to provide added support for service providers.

The Para Todos DVD/VHS is a tool that empowers communities; it can be incorporated into existing programs or used to create new programs specific to a community's needs. This product is free of charge and copyright restrictions and is easy and inexpensive to duplicate.

Conclusion

The key to building capacity among Latino-serving providers is to develop comprehensive, yet flexible, culturally competent health communication materials that offer opportunities for group interaction and support for both parents and service providers beyond the actual session.
