UNITY: The assessment process:

UNITY is a collaborative effort funded by the CDC to develop a strategy for preventing and reducing youth violence prevention in the 45 largest cities in the United States. In order to develop standardized strategies and “Blueprints” for the big cities, it is important to know what strategies are currently in place. A comprehensive effort to collect information from the cities involved a questionnaire administered to Mayors, Chiefs of Police, Health Officer and Superintendents of schools. In addition data over a five-year period was used to develop rates for violent deaths among youth 0-24 years of age in the cities. This assessment will provide baseline measurements that will serve to assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of this five-year effort to reduce youth violence in the largest cities in the United States. Data will be presented to compare and contrast the cities, and their efforts to date.

The survey (questionnaire) will be discussed and the difficulties of collecting data from the key informants will be discussed.
