Internet-based interactive tools, including MyPyramid Plan, MyPyramid Tracker, and MyPyramid Blast-off Game, are integral components of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid food guidance system. These tools provide personalized nutrition and physical activity recommendations to large numbers of consumers and various targeted audiences. During its first year, the MyPyramid.gov website received over 1.6 billion hits (on an average of 35 million hits/week). MyPyramid Plan provides consumers with one of 12 food intake patterns based on age, gender, weight, height, and one of three physical activity levels (<30 minutes/day; 30-60 minutes/day; >60 minutes/day). MyPyramid Tracker is an interactive dietary and physical activity assessment tool. Consumers can evaluate their diet quality and physical activity status, determine their energy balance, receive personalized educational messages, and track data daily or up to one-year. MyPyramid Blast-off game targets children aged 6 to 11 using an interactive game approach to help them learn about food and activity choices. By selecting balanced food and physical activity they can fuel a rocket ship to reach “Planet Power.” An online customer satisfaction survey has been implemented to evaluate the site and self-reported behavior modification. The popularity of the various interactive tools from MyPyramid.gov demonstrate the potential to reach an enormous audience via the Internet and help consumers better understand how to improve their nutrition and physical activity status through targeted educational messages.
