Background: American Indian women have the lowest rate of breast cancer incidence, but have the poorest five-year survival rates of all ethnic groups. The development of culturally relevant communication tool (e.g. breast cancer educational video) to deliver facts regarding breast cancer detention and treatment options are vital to this population .
Methods: Collaboration has been established with both tribal and non-tribal healthcare facilities. Evaluation steps for include: 1) Recruit 30 SW tribal women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and 20 healthcare providers; 2) Show the video “Breast Cancer: The Healing Begins” among the two groups separately 3) Administer questionnaire at two time points: day of viewing the video and 6 months post; 4) Collect and analyze the data from the SW tribal women's and healthcare providers' responses.
Results: Data from the questionnaire and interviewer's notes of participants' responses to open-ended questions in the interview will be analyzed independently by three investigators to identify patterns. Statements made by both patients and providers will be analyzed for patient-provider communication on the video accuracy during the treatment process and treatment outcomes of patients.
Implications: The input of both SW tribal women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and healthcare providers who provide care to SW tribal women are essential to developing an culturally-relevant educational tool, help SW tribal women to make informed treatment decisions and subsequently improve long-term breast cancer survival rates.
