The Doctorate of Nursing Practice has been proposed as one strategy to address this country's increasing demand for nurses who are able to excel in complex, interdisciplinary environments and systems. This paper presents the results of a market assessment conducted in conjunction with the design of a DNP program at a large state university. Web-based and faxed survey instruments designed by the investigators have to date been completed by 77 Illinois public health nurses. Preliminary results demonstrate a high degree of interest in the DNP (65%) and a belief that the DNP will enhance nursing leadership (90%). Reasons for interest include expansion of own knowledge base in practice area (89%), increased leadership skills (86%), increase credibility with other professions (82%), and a desire to teach in nursing (82%). Barriers to pursuing a DNP degree most often cited were lack of money to pay for program (96%), time commitment (96%), and current job responsibilities (89%). This study confirms the existence of a market for a DNP program and suggests areas that need to be considered when designing such a program.
