Association between Lifestyle and Spinal Bone Mineral Density of women in Taiwan

With the rapid aging of the population, osteoporosis, a systemic skeletal disease that is one of the most important causes of fractures, particularly of the hip and spine, has become a major public health problem. To meet the increasing demand from the public, many medical institutions in Taiwan performed checkups for osteoporosis using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), which has been taken as gold standard for bone densitometry. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of spinal bone mineral density (SBMD) with various lifestyle characteristics in women. The study subjects were recruited from a health checkup center in Taipei between September 2000 and April 2001.A cross-sectional study was conducted among 313 pre-menopausal and 96 peri/post-menopausal women who participated in health checkups. Information on lifestyle and SBMD (gm/cm2) was collected through a self-administered questionnaire and DEXA, respectively. The correlations between SBMD and various demographic characteristics including age, body weight, body height, number of years since menstruation ceased, and body mass index (defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) (BMI) was measured by Pearson's correlation coefficient. The relationship between SBMD and various lifestyle variables including diet, exercise habits, adverse behavior (smoking and alcohol consumption) and HRT use was assessed using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with simultaneous adjustment for continuous variables including age, weight, and height. The above analytical procedure was done for pre-menopausal and peri/post-menopausal women separately.
