Issue: The CDC's Advancing HIV Prevention Initiative has prioritized HIV prevention with persons living with HIV/AIDS. “Healthy Relationships” is one of only a small number of evidence-based interventions that meets this need. Description: This five-session small group intervention teaches coping skills to reduce the stress of living with HIV and to build decision-making skills around the issues of disclosure of HIV status and safer sex. The complete implementation package was developed as part of CDC's Replicating Effective Programs project. In addition, a training curriculum for facilitators was developed, and technical assistance is available from the Capacity-building Assistance Providers and the Behavioral and Social Science Volunteers. During the past 14 months, the Healthy Relationships training has been offered 29 times to 470 persons from 193 CDC-directly funded community-based organizations, health departments, and state-funded community-based organizations. Lessons Learned: The demand for training on Healthy Relationships has grown dramatically as the states began funding agencies to provide prevention services to persons living with HIV. Technical assistance needs have also expanded as agencies experience implementation challenges and work to adapt this highly adaptable intervention for multiple communities. The high level of sudden demand has exceeded expectations and capacity. Next Steps: Additional web-based materials are being developed, including a clip list that is indexed by population and suggests a number of Spanish language movie clips. Further training and technical assistance opportunities are being planned in collaboration with state health departments and the CDC-funded STD/HIV Prevention Behavioral Intervention Training Centers.
