Reproductive justice in our states: Building strategic alliances to promote a new reproductive justice policy paradigm

Rocio L. Cordoba, JD, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Post Office Box 412225, Los Angeles, CA 90042, 213-925-6020, cordoba@gseis.ucla.edu

California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (CLRJ) is a statewide advocacy organization developed specifically to apply a reproductive justice frame through a new model of community-driven policy advocacy. CLRJ's mission is to advance Latinas' reproductive health and rights within a social justice and human rights framework with a policy platform and advocacy strategies that are directly informed by California's Latinas/os. CLRJ works in distinct, but interconnected realms: the realm of traditional policy advocacy combined with base-building that provides Latina/o communities with the capacity and tools that will empower them to become actively engaged in the reproductive justice advocacy process. CLRJ has identified coalition-building as a core strategy to promote reproductive justice on multiple levels, while developing strategic alliances with a broad spectrum of women of color, reproductive health/rights, Latina/o, social justice and youth advocates. This session will highlight CLRJ's overarching policy goals: 1) To ensure that Latinas/os have access to comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased sexuality health and rights information and services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to improve their quality of life and ensure healthy communities; 2) To ensure that Latina/o youth have access to comprehensive reproductive health information and services and educational and social supports in order to have healthy, productive and economically secure futures; and 3) To reframe reproductive and sexuality health and rights to reflect the health, cultural, social, economic, and environmental needs and priorities of Latino communities. It will also discuss how CLRJ is applying a community-driven policy advocacy paradigm to promote reproductive justice in California.
