With increased attention to young men's sexual health needs over the past three decades, and successful strides toward lowering risk among young men, it is important to assess the current state of knowledge on male adolescent sexual and reproductive behavior, information, and services. This paper reports on the results of a year-long multi-pronged research program designed to summarize the state of this field and the important lessons learned. First, we synthesized the published literature in the field since 1985. Second, we incorporated new findings from the male panel of the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, as well as the most recent years of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Topics we addressed included: trends in sexual activity among young men, trends in reproductive health outcomes such as teenage fatherhood and STIs, trends in protective behaviors, such as delay in age at becoming sexually active, having one partner, use of the condom, and use of methods by partners ., and sources of sexual and reproductive health information and services that adolescent men use. We focus on differences between those subgroups with the largest gains and those who have shown the least positive movement, focusing on key subgroups— age, income, race, ethnicity, area of residence (urban/rural) and, to the extent possible, sexual orientation. Finally, our presentation will be informed by the results of an invited colloquium of experts convened in June 2006 to identifying existing gaps in knowledge and services and propose policy, program and research steps to address these gaps.
